My wife and I owned two Brother HL-2040s before this and had no trouble with either the hardware or the driver software. We replaced the printers when the time came to replace the drum, which was essentially a cost-effectiveness decision.

We also have a Brother MFC J-415W and love it.

In summary, I'd give this thing a 4 1/2 if it weren't for the printer's integration with Windows 7. And, honestly, I don't know if this is Brother's fault. I installed the HL-2240 drivers provided with the printer (following the normal quick start process..) on my Windows 7 x64 PC for testing purposes and I still can't print to it. For my wife's machine (also Windows 7 x64), I just plugged in the printer and loaded the driver from Microsoft and it works fine. I don't understand it.

My wife is the target user and that's all that matters, but this was still very, very aggravating.

Also, Brother needs to move into the 21st century regarding the installer for its downloaded software. The process of exploding the archive is very antiquated.

I first bought the Samsung wireless laser printer for under $100, as the reviews said, it never worked wirelessly after the first print. I returned it for this beauty. The setup was incredibly easy, plug it in, download the software from the disc, and your ready... in all about 5 minutes. Some reviews said it was loud and the fan stays on... the printer is no louder than any other printer and all laser printers have fans, this one is pretty quiet, and doesn't stay on longer than a couple minutes after the last page has printed. The printing is incredibly fast and the quality is exactly what I was looking for. If you are printing text, it is perfect; I wouldn't recommend full page black and white photos though. I've had it for only a couple days, so we'll see how it lasts. It is compact, looks good, and the price is perfect, I highly recommend this printer... so far.

First, I'm going to discuss my motivation for buying a new printer. With my HP color printer, you can't print in black ink if some of the color cartridges are empty. I don't use it as often as I had planned because of the ink expense. I wanted to print pictures that I took with my camera. Now I mostly print documents. Lately, there are constant messages about low ink and it can take a few minutes to figure out next steps to get past the ink warnings just to print one page. The pages print fine, but I'm busy and it shouldn't take so much time to print an occasional document in black ink. I sometimes avoid printing pages when it would be more convenient to have a printed copy. I don't use it to print many pictures because of the ink cost. Family members who aren't as computer savvy call me to help with the HP printer asking what to do next to get past the warnings.

In contrast, printing with this new printer has been a real pleasure. The set up on my windows 7 computer was quick and easy. It prints much faster and is far less noisy than the HP printer. The best part is that I can send a page to the printer and it prints right away. The ink cost will be much less than the HP printer. There will only be one ink cartridge so there will be fewer warnings. When it gets low on ink, I'll buy one new cartridge not 6 (for the HP printer). I expect this printer to be much easier to use and maintain.
